Daejeon, located in the center of South Korea, is neighboring with Boeun and Yeonggi to the north, Nonsan and Gongju to the west, and Geumsan and Yongdong to the south, Okcheon to the East. Daejon is located within a radius of 167 km of the south of Seoul, so anywhere in Korea is reachable within 3 hours from Daejeon. It covers 539.79 square kilometer with five boroughs, which consists of 0.54% of total territory of Korea. Daejon is in the same latitude as Athens, Lisbon, and San Francisco. It is also the gateway between Yeongnam province and Honam province. Its population is 1,475,961 with 518,039 households as of December, 2006.

Daejeon originally developed from farms and houses that were on the hillsides and the valleys between the four mountains and along the three rivers. Daejeon is surrounded by four mountains which are Mt. Gyeoryong, Mt. Gyejoksan, Mt. Sikjang, and Mt. Manin. The city is also located along three major rivers. They are the Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon. These rivers help form the basin for the city. The water for the city comes from these three rivers and many small branches of these rivers. All rivers run from south to north, and flow into Geumgang.
It boasts of the hub of transportation where railways, expressways, and national highways conveniently connect Daejeon to all parts of the country. In addition, Daejeon is internationally accessible through Cheongju Airport, (30 minutes away), Incheon International Airport (2 hours and 30 minutes away), and Dangjin Harbour (1 hour away). Especially, with the arrival of the KTX high-speed train in 2004, Daejeon is now only 45 minutes from Seoul.
Over the past 30 years, Daejeon is the center for advanced science and technology with 80 research and educational research institutes, including 800 venture companies. Daejeon has a designated Daedeok Science Town, a Daedeok Techno Valley, the Daejeon 3rd and 4th Industrial Complexes, and a new industrial zone. Daejeon has also promoted the R&D Special Zone Law and constructed an innovative support system to encourage innovative international research and development clusters by linking the excellent technical expertise available in Daedeok Science Town to the techno-industries in the Daedeok Valley. In 2006 alone, Daejeon¡¯s trade volume stood at US$4.78 Bil., which accounted for US$ 2.39 Bil., in exports and US$ 2.39 Bil., in imports.
Daejeon is also the second administrative capital city of South Korea where the key national agencies like the Korean Intellectual Property Office, a patent court, three armed services' headquarters are located.
