Gongju is located in the center of South Korea and of Chungcheongnam Province. It is sharing borders with 7 cities and counties in Chungcheongnam Province - Yeongi County and Daejeon Metropolitan City in the east, Cheongyang County and Yesan County in the west, Buyeo County and Nonsan City in the south and Asan City and Cheonan City in the north. It covers 940.74 square kilometer, which consists of 10.9% of the total territory of Chungcheongnam Province. The population of the city is around 130,595 with 1 towns, 10 subcounties, 6 dongs as of December, 2005.
Two major mountains are located near Gongju (Mt. Charyong and Mt. Gyeryong), and Geum River runs through the city from east to west. Several tributary rivers such as Yugu-cheon, Jeongan-cheon, Daekyo-cheon, Jemin-cheon, and Hyoljeo-cheon meet here.
Mt. Charyong range blocks the freezing north wind, makes Gongju warmer than northern cities. Affected by Geum River, however, the city shows the continental temperature pattern with a wide range of temperature between the hottest and coldest periods of the year. The average spring temperature is 11.3”ĘC, slightly higher than that of neighboring areas excluding big cities. The average summer temperature is 23.3”ĘC, lower than Buyeo's 23.8”ĘC, and 1”ĘC lower than Daejeon's 24.3”ĘC. The average winter temperature of Chungcheongnam province is -1.5”ĘC ~ 0.5”ĘC, and that of Gongju is about 1”ĘC, slightly higher than neighboring areas.
Gongju was formerly the capital of the Baekje Kingdom and holds magnificent cultural and historic heritages. Mt. Gyeryongsan and Geumgang River provide beautiful surroundings to scattered historical monuments such as Muryeongwangneung Tomb and Gongsanseong Fortress. Also Gapsa Temple and Donghaksa Temple are famous, as well as the hot springs of Magok.
