Nonsan, promoted to the city-status on March 1, 1996, is adjoining with Daejeon Metropolitan City to the east, Buyeo-gun to the west, Iksan City and Wanju-gun in Jeollabukdo Province to the south, and Gongju City to the north. It has the 135, 210 population with 51,992 households. Nonsan is occupying 554.7 square kilometer, which stands at 6.5% of whole territory of Chungcheongnam province.
In terms of longitude, Nonsan city lies with Jeonju, Boseong, Gongju, Pyongtaek, Seongnam and Guri, and in terms of latitude, the city is situated nearly on the same latitude as St. Louis (USA), Kabul (Afghanistan), Teheran (Iran) and Algiers (Algeria).
The temperate climate, with an annual average temperature of 12.7 ¨¬C, has four distinct seasons.
The highest temperature in summer is about 25.8 ¨¬C and the coldest temperature in January is -1.8 ¨¬C. The difference between the warm and cold temperatures is about 27.6 ¨¬C. Nonsan's winter is relatively warm compared with that of other regions. The rainfall in 2001 was 691.5mm and rainfall is concentrated during the summer time due to the influence of the northern Pacific high pressure. It has the lowest level of rainfall in March.
Nonsan is a vital transportation hub, where both the Honam Expressway and railway connect the Cholla Province and Cungcheong province. Also, National Highway number 1 links it to Seoul.
Thanks to the fertile soil and the ample amount of sunlight, Nonsan holds nationwide prestige as the high quality strawberry producing area, which accounts for 14% of the total Korean production. Also, it is the mecca of pork processing with the Jinju Ham Co., the Meat Distribution Center of the Nonsan Livestock Cooperative Federation and Nokwon Meat.
Nonsan is located on the connected development axis of Daejeon, Gunsan and the Janghang Industrial Complex. Thus Nonsan can easily support the two regions. The number of individual factories in the area of Nonsan is gradually increasing thanks to good natural conditions such as the favorable land location for the factories, sufficient supply of industrial use water. Besides, Nonsan has other advantages in the infrastructure and social conditions, like convenient transportation, skillful labor force and excellent markets that are close by. |
