Geumsan, the southernmost of the province and the boundary gate to Yeongnam/Honam district, is sharing boundaries with Daejeon-si and Nonsan-si on the northwest, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk province and Muju on the south, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk province and Okcheon-gun on the east. It occupies 576 square kilometer, which consists of 6.7% of total territory of South Chuncheong province (8.699km2). In administrative district, Geumsan controls 1 town and 9 subcounties. Geumsan is the center region of Korean peninsula. Its size is 24 km east to west, and 32 km north to south.
Geumsan-gun is in the most inland area of southern Korea, and its climate is classified as southern inland climate. Since it consists of mountainous zones, it has extreme temperature and topographical rainfall. The annual average temperature of Geumsan area is 11.8 ¨¬C. The average temperature is the highest in August, averaging 25.8 ¨¬C, and it is the lowest in January averaging -2.7 ¨¬C. The annual average rainfall of Geumsan-gun is approximately 1,300mm, which means more rain than the Korean average 1,159mm.
Largely owing to the highly acidic almost white sedimentary soil, Geumsan is the best location to raise ginseng, the world widely renowned herb. It has a trading center of ginseng including international ginseng market, dried ginseng market, ginseng traditional market (1 day trade amount: 150 tons/5,700,000,000 won), which is top 3 medical market of the nation.
Geumsan is widely known as the county of four season¡¯s festivals and sightseeing & events; in the spring when the flowers of cherry tress are blossoming, Silk Town Mountain Cherry Blossom Festival is hold. In the summer, there is Geumgang Folk Festival, which is to experience the local folk culture and life. One of the key festivals offered during autumn is the Geumsan Ginseng Festival under the catch phrase "One day in Geumsan Makes Your Future Brighter¡±. Geumsan holds Jangdong Moon Festival to wish for the peace and good harvest of the village.
