Buyeo-gun is located in southwestern of Chungcheongnam province. It borders Nonsan-si on the east, Seocheon-gun and Boryeong-si on the west, Iksan-si, Jollabuk province on the south (with the Geumgang in between), and Gongju-si and Cheongyang-gun on the north.
Buyeo has the same latitude as Haulbin, Windam and the same longitude as Tokyo, Teheran. Buyeo has a population of 81,850 as of December, 2005 and the population density is 127 persons per §´. The area of Buyeo county is 624.53§´, having the 5th largest area in Chungcheongnam province after Gongju city, Seosan city, Dangjin-gun and Cheonan city.
The Charyeong Mountains pass through the northwest of Buyeo-gun, spread smoothly to the southeast, and are reduced to plains along the Geumgang River. Seongdaesan, Amisan, and Myeongsan Mountains rise high on the northwest. The Geumgang River flows south through the eastern part, and flood plains its banks. The Guryong Plains, west of the river, are the granary of the region with its fertility and good irrigation.
Buyeo has a temperate climate, with an annual average temperature of 12.4¢ªC. The average temperature is 0.4¢ªC in winter and 24.6¢ªC in summer, showing 24.2¢ªC of difference in temperature. The annual average precipitation is 1388.4mm, most of precipitation concentrated in summer owing to the effect of the north Pacific high.
In aspect of transportation, Buyeo is the crossroad connecting with the southwestern part of Korea and the inland.
As the capital of the Baekje Kingdom (one of the three countries before the unification of the peninsula that existed until the mid-7th century) for more than one hundred years, Buyeo preserves vast amount of significant and fascinating historical heritages. Due to the bountiful historical, natural and cultural attractions, this region has long been a major tourist destination in Korea. |
