Located at the center of the Chungcheongnam province, Cheongyang is the most naturally-protected area with the clean and clear natural environment and high water quality. Cheongyang, with the area of 479.68 square kilometer, is neighboring with Gongju to the east, Boryeong to the west, Buyeo to the south, and Hongseong and Yesan to the north. The Chongyang population is 35,144 with 13,800 households as of December, 2006. It consists of 1 town and 9 subcounties.
The Charyeong Mountains pass through the county from the northeast to the southwest. Mr. Chilgap, Mt. Seongtae, Mr. Namsan, and Mr. Useong come from Charyeong Mountains and these make Cheongyang as ”°Alps of Chungnam”±.
Influenced by a typical continental climate, Cheongyang especially has a huge temperature gap of the summer and the winter due to the heavy climatic extremity, indicating 10.8”É of its yearly mean temperature. The average temperature during the month of January is around -2.9”ĘC, while during the month of August is around 24.7”ĘC. The difference over the year is 27.9”ĘC. The Cheongyang region has 1,283mm of rainfall on annual average.
In December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Cheonggyang is 2,212 and the employees numbered 8,241.
There is nationally renowned for the Cheingyang pepper, grown in the beautiful sunshine and clean air. These result in the pepper with plenty of mineral and lots of capsaicin (the factor of pepper's hot taste) and a bright color. Also, Cheongyang publicize its specialties through Cheongyang Vine and Pepper Festival which aims to promote Chinese matrimony vine and pepper from Cheongyang. The festival is also designed to create an environment where producers and consumers can interact with each other through this regional agricultural event.
