Gyeryong city, promoted to the city status on Sep. 19th 2003, is sharing boundaries with Daejeon to the east, Nonsan to the west and south, and Gonju to the north. It is occupying 60.68 square kilometer, which is accounting for the 0.7% of Chungcheongnam province and only 17% of the land in the city is arable. The population of the city is 34,451 with 11,432 households as of December, 2005. It is divided into 1 dong and 2 subcounties.
Gyeryong has a temperate climate, with an annual average temperature of 11.5¢ªC. The average temperature is -3.4 ¢ªC in January and 25.7¢ªC in August, showing 29.1 ¢ªC of difference in temperature. The annual average precipitation is 1637mm, most of precipitation concentrated in summer owing to the effect of the north pacific high atmospheric pressure, and one of the heaviest rain areas in Korea owing to lots of mountains in the city.
Gyeryong city is the national military stronghold with army, air force and navy headquarters.
Also, it is widely known as the city of sightseeing. Gyeryong has renowned tourist spots such as Mr. Gyeryong, which is named after its shape of a hen and a dragon and considered as the most spiritual mountain in Korea.
